Our Embodiment. Our Healing
“Yoga and Healing for Black Embodiment is a well organized, culturally grounded book that brought me back to yoga as an ancient system of practice and philosophy, not simply a modern fitness routine. As a wellness practitioner that offers trauma informed approaches to wellness, and who often reads books and articles that center yoga, healing, and embodiment work for Black and Brown folks, I appreciated how clearly Danny Angelo Fluker Jr. guides the reader through Black wellness and common misconceptions about yoga, while also providing a foundational historical overview, early Black yogic presence in the United States, and discussions of lineage and healing circles. Throughout the book, he returns to an important point that I strongly agree with and believe is so important: yoga is a lived discipline, something we should practice with integrity and embody in the present in all areas of life, while honoring the depth and lineage of the tradition. What stood out most to me is the emphasis on embodiment and liberation, and the way the book situates personal practice within broader cultural and systemic realities. That framing matters, especially for Black practitioners and for anyone supporting Black communities in wellness spaces. The “Embodied Liberation Practices” section and the journaling prompts are also a real strength. They feel accessible and grounded, not performative, and they offer practical ways to reflect and integrate the material instead of simply moving on after reading. If you have spent years studying yoga philosophy or somatic work, you may find some sections introductory, however the clarity and accessibility are components of what makes this a solid resource for a wide range of readers. Overall, I would recommend this book to practitioners, educators, and wellness professionals who want culturally responsive frameworks that respect yoga’s roots while supporting how we live and practice today.” - Marlene M. Note from the Author
“I am deeply passionate about the intersection of Yoga and Blackness. For the past two years, I’ve been writing a book on Black Healing and Yoga to help bridge the gap in understanding and make the practice more accessible and meaningful within our communities.” -Danny Angelo Fluker Jr
A Portion That Didn’t Make the Final Edit
When I finalized my manuscript, some sections were set aside for the sake of flow and space. One of those was written particularly for Christian readers engaging with the chapter “Is Yoga Demonic?” I wanted to honor that perspective directly, and though it didn’t make the printed edition, I’m sharing it here as a companion reflection. For those who come to this chapter from a Christian background: I honor the seriousness with which you approach questions of faith and discernment. My intention here is not to replace or diminish your devotion to Christ. Rather, it is to clarify that yoga, at its heart, is not worship of “other gods” but a discipline of breath, movement, and inward awareness that has, for many, become a doorway into healing. Where yoga speaks of divine presence, I invite you to hear that through your own language of God’s Spirit at work in and through creation. Where yoga teaches stillness, I encourage you to see the resonance with Christian practices of prayer, fasting, and contemplation. If you choose to practice yoga, you do not have to surrender your faith to do so; you may even find it deepens your capacity for rest, focus, and embodied devotion. - Danny Angelo Fluker Jr
